One of the most recognized venues in Mexico City is the Soumaya Museum; located next tothe Inbursa Aquarium and the Jumex Museum. It has been defined as “the most striking museum in the world” thanks to its asymmetrical architecture and bright finishes composed of thousands of aluminum hexagons. If you are an art passionate, you like art history and want to spend an unforgettable day, be sure to visit this museum: today we will tell you everything you need to know.
The Soumaya Museum has three enclosures in the Mexico City: one located in the Plaza Loreto, another in the Plaza Carso and the last in the House of Guillermo Tovar de Teresa. Today we will focus on the one located in Plaza Carso, on Boulevard Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, Colonia Granada in the so-called Nuevo Polanco.
This non-profit cultural institution was founded in 1994, while the Soumaya Museum in Plaza Carso was inaugurated in 2011. Its design was in the hands of the Mexican architect Fernando Romero. The name of the museum seeks to honor the memory of Soumaya Domit, wife of the entrepreneur and founder of the museum: Carlos Slim. In order to exhibit his Foundation´s collection, it offers more than 30 centuries of American and European art.
About 70 thousand pieces are protected, preserved and exhibited in the Soumaya Museum. Among the main works that stand out in the extensive art collection are the works of the French sculptor Auguste Rodin, unique works of the painter Vincent Van Gogh, as well as of Mexican artists such as Diego Rivera, José María Velasco, José Clemente Orozco, among others. It also promotes national and international level temporary and itinerant exhibitions of various kinds.
Admission to the museum is free and is open 365 days a year. We recommend you to go with comfortable clothes and tennis since the museum has six floors, each with its own identity, in which you will find a wide variety of samples: models, coins and old notes, ivory carvings from Asian cultures, as well as explanations of the periods of art in order to know and better understand its historical evolution.
It should be noted that the beauty of the Soumaya Museum lies not only in the façade but in its organic interior design; with wide corridors and ramps so that people with disabilities can visit it comfortably and randomnly. In addition, it offers free activities such as conferences, guided tours or workshops. And at the end of the amazing tour you can visit the souvenir shop and get a replica, art books, among other souvenirs.
